High Rollers Luxury Bowling
This is the coolest bowling alley I’ve ever been to. Period. If you are into bowling and you live in the Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts area, it is well worth the trip to check this place out.
Every once in a while, I get to shoot a travel segment we do, called Daytrippers. It’s nice because it doesn’t air the same day we shoot it. We get the opportunity to take some time to put the story together. In a lot of television newsrooms these days, that is unheard of. I used a lot of quick shots of bowling balls and pins being knocked down… something we call ‘nat pops,’ or natural sound. This is done to keep the pace up, and to make the story more visually interesting. Otherwise, it is just a lot of long shots of people bowling, which will get boring quick. Another thing I try to do, really on every shoot, is to shoot a wide variety of shots – wide, medium, close-up, extreme close-up, extreme wide, high, low, point of view…this gives me a lot of options when editing. This was actually a pretty easy shoot, I had three hours and total access anywhere in the bowling alley. They even let me shoot in the casino for a few minutes. The editing was a little more challenging, trying to make sure I didn’t repeat any shots during those nat sound collages. Oh…breaking news…gotta go!
