A large contingent of protesters held ground at the Shrine of remembrance yesterday in Melbourne surrounded by the largest mass police presence we have seen yet. The protesters sang the national anthem and held a 1-minute silence for suicide victims. Negotiations were held between police and protesters on several occasions with more than half of the mob leaving in the late evening with Police promising not to harass them. Police then moved in on the few hundred remaining protesters firing rubber bullets and making arrests. Numerous protesters were badly injured in the process and the sounds of blood-curdling screams could be heard over the sound of gunfire.

The media is calling it a shameful desecration of the monument, while protesters held respect and were adamant that they stood for sovereignty just as those who did in the war.
