PAGCOR CHIEF SAYS PH GAMING INDUSTRY BACK TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) announced that the gaming industry in the Philippines has bounced back to pre-pandemic levels. PAGCOR Chairman Andrea Domingo made the statement indicating the resilience and recovery of the industry, bringing positive news to the country’s economy.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the gaming industry in the Philippines has shown remarkable growth and is proving to be an essential contributor to the country’s economic recovery. Domingo highlighted that the industry has rebounded significantly and is now operating at levels seen before the advent of the global health crisis.
According to the data released by PAGCOR, the overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the first half of 2021 has reached PHP 57.4 billion (approximately $1.15 billion). This figure reflects the recovery and sustained growth of the industry, indicating its ability to adapt and thrive amidst adversity.
Domingo attributed the industry’s rebound to the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, including gaming operators, regulators, and the government. She emphasized that strict health protocols and safety measures have been strictly implemented throughout all gaming establishments, ensuring the safety of both employees and patrons. The effective management of health risks has allowed the industry to operate at full capacity, thereby contributing to its recovery.
The resurgence of the gaming industry is not only beneficial for the country’s economy but also for job creation. PAGCOR recorded that the industry directly employs nearly 129,000 Filipinos and indirectly provides livelihoods for many more through ancillary businesses. The recovery of the industry ensures the stability of these jobs and the potential for further growth in the future.
The optimism surrounding the gaming industry is further supported by the reopening of integrated resorts and casinos, which were severely affected by pandemic-related restrictions. PAGCOR has worked closely with these establishments to develop health and safety guidelines, allowing them to welcome back patrons while ensuring their well-being.
Furthermore, innovative strategies and initiatives such as online gaming platforms have helped the industry adapt to the challenges posed by the current situation and reach a wider audience. This shift towards online gaming has not only provided entertainment options for the public but also generated revenue for the industry.
While the gaming industry’s recovery is indeed a positive development, PAGCOR Chairman Domingo urges caution and continuous compliance with health protocols to prevent any setbacks. As the fight against COVID-19 continues, the industry must remain vigilant in maintaining a safe environment for both employees and players alike.
The revival of the gaming industry in the Philippines serves as a beacon of hope, not only for the country’s economy but also for the recovery of other hard-hit sectors. As more businesses find ways to adapt and bounce back, the nation can look forward to a brighter future and eventual full economic resurgence. The gaming industry’s return to pre-pandemic levels is a testament to the Filipino spirit of resilience and determination to overcome any obstacle.
